New Jersey state police said a body found Saturday near the Raritan River may be that of a 3-month-old girl allegedly thrown off a highway bridge by her father earlier this year.
Clothing and wrappings in which the child were found are consistent with the descriptions given in relation to three-month-old Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem, state police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Jones said.
But he said the infant is considered unidentified until DNA testing or other means can prove her identity.
Prosecutors said the infant’s father, Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem of Galloway Township, killed her Feb. 16, several hours after abducting her from her maternal grandmother’s East Orange apartment. He has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges.
Prosecutors charge that Abdur-Raheem tossed the baby from Driscoll Bridge into the Raritan River.
Attorney Mitchell Liebowitz said last week that the baby’s mother, Venetta Benjamin, went to the East Orange police on Feb. 15 seeking protection from Abdur-Raheem.
Benjamin got the order on Feb. 16, but police say Abdur-Raheem abducted the child before it could be served.
A prayer service was held Sunday, February 21. People gathered to pray for a miracle that, against the odds, baby Zara is alive.
